Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Individual trauma therapy that can support couples work
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an individual trauma therapy developed by Francine Shapiro. It is not a standalone couples method. In couples work it is often used alongside couples therapy when one partner's trauma, an affair, or older wounds keep getting triggered and driving conflict.
Best for
A partner whose past trauma keeps being triggered in the relationship
Betrayal or affair hurt that stays intense despite couples work
Old wounds (childhood or past relationships) that fuel present reactions
Couples already in, or open to, couples therapy alongside it
How it works
After history-taking and preparation, the therapist guides one person to briefly recall a distressing memory while using bilateral stimulation (side-to-side eye movements, taps, or tones). The goal is for the memory to feel less charged so it triggers less in the present. Sessions are usually individual, even when the work is coordinated with a couples therapist.
What to expect
Expect a few preparation sessions focused on coping and stabilization before memory processing begins. Some clinicians offer both EMDR and couples therapy; others coordinate with a separate couples therapist. Ask how they integrate the two and whether your partner will be involved.
Well-researched for PTSD and recommended in several trauma treatment guidelines. Research on EMDR as part of couple therapy is limited, so it is best seen as a complement to couples therapy, not a replacement. Look for EMDRIA-trained or certified clinicians.
I am passionate about working with individuals, couples, and families, that are ready to lean in and find something that works to make change in their life. I work collaboratively with my clients to find the methods and tools that work best for them and explore how to best integrate them into practical use. I am trained in EMDR and Brainspotting and use both to process trauma that sometimes has clients stuck. I'd love to connect and hear about your counseling needs!
