Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

Rewiring attachment bonds so partners feel safe reaching for each other

Emotionally Focused Therapy, pioneered by Dr. Sue Johnson, is an attachment-based approach that helps partners identify negative interaction cycles and create new, emotionally honest bonding conversations. The goal is a more secure emotional connection—not just better communication scripts.

Best for

  • Couples stuck in pursue–withdraw or criticize–distance cycles
  • Emotional disconnection or loneliness in the relationship
  • Partners who want deeper emotional intimacy
  • Many couples recovering from betrayal (with specialized care)

How it works

EFT moves through stages: de-escalating the negative cycle, restructuring emotional responses so each partner can share softer primary emotions and needs, and consolidating new patterns of reaching and responding. The therapist helps you access and express the feelings underneath the conflict.

What to expect

Sessions focus on present-moment emotional experience between you. You may revisit key moments of hurt or longing so both partners can respond differently—with empathy rather than defense.

One of the most researched couple therapies; strong evidence for reducing distress and increasing relationship satisfaction.
