Discernment Counseling

Clarity when one or both partners are unsure about staying

Discernment Counseling, developed by Bill Doherty, is a short-term process for mixed-agenda couples—when one partner is leaning out and the other leaning in. The goal is clarity and confidence about a direction: stay and commit to couple therapy, move toward separation, or pause the decision with better understanding.

Best for

  • One partner considering divorce or separation
  • Ambivalence about whether to try couple therapy
  • Couples who need a structured decision process—not open-ended therapy yet
  • Situations where traditional couple therapy feels premature

How it works

Typically 1–5 sessions. Much of the work is individual time with each partner plus brief conjoint time. The counselor helps each person understand their contribution to problems and weigh paths forward without pressuring reconciliation or breakup.

What to expect

This is not standard couple therapy. You will explore personal meanings of the relationship crisis and leave with a clearer next step. If you choose to stay and work, a referral to ongoing couple therapy often follows.

Specialized protocol with growing adoption among clinicians who work with couples on the brink; distinct from traditional marital therapy.
