Gottman Method

Research-based tools for lasting friendship and conflict repair

Developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman from decades of observational research, the Gottman Method helps couples strengthen friendship, manage conflict, and create shared meaning. It is structured, skill-focused, and grounded in what predicts relationship success over time.

Best for

  • Couples who want practical skills and clear structure
  • Recurring conflict or criticism–defensiveness cycles
  • Partners rebuilding trust after rupture (when both are willing)
  • Couples who appreciate research-backed approaches

How it works

Therapy typically begins with a thorough assessment (questionnaires and a conflict discussion), then moves into interventions drawn from the Sound Relationship House—building love maps, nurturing fondness and admiration, turning toward bids for connection, and using soft startups and repair attempts during conflict.

What to expect

Homework and skill practice between sessions are common. Sessions often include guided conversations, physiological awareness (e.g., noticing flood), and concrete tools you can use at home.

Supported by extensive longitudinal research on couple interaction patterns; many clinicians complete Gottman Level 1–3 training.
